I have been a fairly keen photographer since my teens, shooting mainly on colour slide film in the pre-digital era. However, I went completely digital some years ago. Almost all of my older transparency series have been scanned into digital form, so the slide projector hasn't been used for years!
Past equipment
I used Nikon digital SLRs (DSLRs) for some years - the Nikon D70, D80 and D300s. That last camera was lovely (though had less pixels than modern cameras) but it was heavy. I found that as I got older, my neck increasingly complained about the weight! It was time to reduce the mass hanging around my neck while not losing quality... mirrorless beckoned.
I used Panasonic
Lumix G5, GH3 and G80, but sought better performing models.
Current equipment
My main interchangeable lens camera is a Lumix G9
- a Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens mirrorless camera. This is normally used with the Leica 12-60mm F/2.8-4 lens, though I have a few others. (12-60mm in MFT is like a 24-120mm full-frame and copes with most shooting needs.) The camera itself isn't particularly light, but the lenses are, and my neck rarely complains!
I also use (probably even more than the G9) a
Sony RX10 iv, which has a (so-called) 1" sensor and a fixed full-frame equivalent Zeiss lens of 24-600mm F/2.4-4. The lens is amazingly sharp for such a wide range of focal lengths, and I use this for most of my bird and other wildlife photography. (I could also use the 100-300mm lens on the G9, but the RX10 has phase-detect autofocus, which the G9 lacks, so is much better for capturing motion.)
I share a highly pocketable Sony RX10 vii
with Chris. Being so small, it is fiddly to use, but the specifications are superb. The sharp Zeiss lens is an equivalent 24-200mm F/2.4-4.5.
Cataloging and Post-processing
I attempt to get the photos as good as possible in-camera to minimise the amount of post-processing required. However, I shoot in RAW format, import everything into Adobe Lightroom Classic, and often make minor exposure tweaks or do some horizon-straightening or cropping. I sometimes make use of Topaz Gigapixel and Photo-AI, particularly when using the RX10 at 600mm and having to crop in to the subject.
